The story
In March 2024, six people from the Valley of Coixtlahuaca, belonging to the Chocholteca Nation, visited the Ethnological Museum of Berlin to reunite with the Lienzo Coixtlahuaca II, 127 years after it left Mexico for Germany.
This exhibition emerges from that encounter—from the desire to learn more about the Lienzo and the people who embody it—a work measuring 3.83 by 4.42 meters, kept in a museum case more than 9,700 kilometers away.
What is it like to reunite with the Lienzo? What happens when the heritage of an identity lies far from home? What does the Lienzo mean today for the community in Berlin and for the community in the Valley of Coixtlahuaca? What does the Lienzo tell us about who we are?
